Flowers offered for Ninoy at NAIA

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) – The Ninoy Aquino Movement (NAM) on Friday morning (August 21) led the wreath-laying ceremonies at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

This has been an annual tradition since the restoration of democracy in 1986, in commemoration of the martyrdom of former Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. — the father of President Benigno Aquino III.

A floral offering was held at the exact spot where the former senator was assassinated in 1983. It was followed by a mass at the airport tarmac.

The ceremony was attended by former Sen. Heherson Alvarez, who renamed the airport in honor of Aquino, representatives from the Spirit of EDSA Foundation, and the Commission on Human Rights.

In line with the 32nd anniversary of Aquino’s martyrdom, the NAM also awarded chosen freedom fighters and leaders who fought for the country's democracy.

Former vice president Teofisto Guingona Jr. and the late Sen. Agapito "Butz" Aquino received the Ninoy Aquino Medal of Valor.

Alvarez, who was NAM's founding chairman, said Guingona was known for championing human rights, while Butz fought dictatorship just like his brother Ninoy.
